Washington County Even Start Program, Tic Tac Toe Math, December 9, 2004

This three hour session provided adult education instructors and their adult students with hands-on instruction to the unique method that Dr. Cooper developed for individuals whose math skills have been held back because they have not been able to learn the multiplication facts.  Teachers and students learned the patterns that enable them to make the times tables from 1 through infinite of both whole numbers, factions and decimals.   The session begins with the basic patterns and the 9 single digit grids.  The participants then learn to make the times tables 1 to 20.  After a break, they returned to learn how to make double and multi-digit Tic Tac Toe Grids and use them to complete multiplication and division operations.  The session concluded with a brief demonstration of how to use Tic Tac Toe Math for solving operations involving fractions, decimals and percentages.

What techniques will you use in your classroom this week?

v               I will try all, but wish it could have been an all day lecture.

v               I will try to use all the techniques I learned today.

v               I believe all the techniques I learned will continue using.

v               Tic Tac Toe method.

v               All

v               The times tables

v               Grids.

v               Probably multiplication and fractions.

v                All of them.

v               Probably the arrow and half chair grid.

v               The fractions and percentages.

v               One digit grids.

v               All.

One thing that stands out as most valuable from today’s session is . . .

v               Grown-ups will finally have an alternative.

v               Hands-on use, step by step.

v               A new approach to doing something

v               The fractions and percentages techniques

v               Tic Tac Toe patterns to use grids.

v               The grids and simplicity of procedure once it clicks.

v               Grids.

v               Once you get it down it is easy as pie.

v               How easy once concept is grasped.

v               Using the multiple grid numbers.

v               I learned how to do % better.

v               The grid.

v               Quicker way of doing math.

v               Everything just to continue on learning these new techniques.

v               Everything stands out and is most valuable in two days session.

v               Tic Tac Toe very effective.

v               Multiplication tables.

What follow-up do you need (Trainings/Technical Assistance)?

v               His book about this.

v               Trainings

v               More training on some of the percents and fractions.

v               Probably just to continue on learning these new techniques.

v               Anything.

v               Practice!

v               Trainings.

v               Practice

v               Probably implementation

v               None.

v               Just more repetition

v               Not sure yet—need a little more time for fractions and percents—exciting, though.

In your opinion, what would be the most effective delivery of this training (online, face-to-face, or distance)?

v     Good.

v     Face-to-face (15)
