The Language Development Series is a collection of techniques and instructional tools that Dr. Cooper has developed and found to be effective with children and adults who learn differently. These techniques are not for everyone, but rather for those who have not been able to learn with other methods. Reluctant readers and writers often give up on learning to use written language because the techniques used do not match the way they process information. The techniques and tools listed here are for the most part age and grade level independent. For example, the spelling and vocabulary books do not have lists of words for different levels, but rather the person collects the words to be learned from their experience.

“The environment adds meaning to speech, but in writing, we need to use words to describe the environment. When individuals with writing problems write, they tend to be ambiguous because they are not used to using modifiers to describe the environment.” Writing Workshop, Richard Cooper, Ph.D.

Parts of Speech Pattern This learning aid lays out the parts of speech in a way that allows students to see the patterns in defining words and constructing sentences. Many individuals who learn well with patterns find this tool for understanding the structure of language very helpful. Since students with weak written language skills often find parts of speech confusing, seeing the parts of speech in this pattern, makes grammar and the structure of language more concrete and manageable. |
